The Complete Works of John Keats in Five Volumes, 1900 - Fine Vellum Set
First Edition Thus: 1900-1901. A beautiful set of full vellum bindings with four floral gilt design to each board, red leather title label to the spines, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, rough page edges and original silk page markers still present but detached. In lovely condition with slight toning to the vellum, light marks to the boards - mainly rear boards of volumes IV and V - and some dulling to gilt lettering and top edges but overall well preserved with sharp corners and bright gilt designs. Decorative title page, with red & black lettering in the Art Nouveau style initialed by the artist A.W.S.. Mild foxing to endpapers, first & last few pages and outer edges, a few corner creases and sporadic light foxing throughout the volumes with some toning to pages otherwise a clean, bright and unique set. When purchased I was informed the set came from the family library of Maxwell Laurie (publisher's brother, Thomas Werner Laurie) and his wife Marjorie (daughter of the Governor of Burma, Sir Herbert Thirkell White) but the volumes have no signatures or bookplates.
