'Edward Burra (born in 1905) has been one of the most prolific, consistent and individual artists working in Britain in this century. His lasrge watercolours, whether of macabre, sleazy and sinister subjects, or of landscapes and still life, are instantly recognisable and fix themselves in the mind with unusual tenacity'.
